To strengthen, establish, make firm—especially in faith; to fix firmly in place; to be confirmed
A word of deep pastoral weight in the New Testament, used when Jesus prays that Peter's faith may not fail and charges him to 'strengthen your brothers' (Luke 22:32), or when Paul prays that God may 'establish your hearts blameless' (1 Thess 3:13). The underlying image is of propping something up so it stands firm—visible in the literal sense of Jesus 'setting his face' resolutely toward Jerusalem (Luke 9:51) and the 'great chasm fixed' between Abraham's side and Hades (Luke 16:26). Spanish 'confirmar / afirmar' and French 'affermir' consistently convey this sense of making solid and steadfast.
Senses
1. strengthen or establish spiritually — To strengthen or establish someone spiritually: the dominant NT usage, referring to fortifying believers in faith, resolve, or moral standing. Jesus tells Peter to 'strengthen your brothers' (Luke 22:32); Paul prays that God will 'establish your hearts' (1 Thess 3:13; 2 Thess 2:17; 3:3) and that the gospel will 'establish' the Romans (Rom 16:25). Spanish 'confirmar / afirmar' and French 'affermir' uniformly point to inner firmness across all nine occurrences. 9×

2. fix firmly in place — To fix firmly in a physical or metaphorical position: a concrete sense of setting something immovably in place. Jesus 'set his face' toward Jerusalem with unshakable determination (Luke 9:51), and Abraham tells the rich man that a 'great chasm has been fixed' between them (Luke 16:26). Spanish 'afirmó / está fijado' and German 'estēriktai' highlight the permanence of the fixture. 2×

3. be established or strengthened — Passive: to be established or strengthened by another's action. Paul desires to impart a spiritual gift so the Romans may 'be established' (Rom 1:11), and Peter writes to those who are already 'established in the truth' (2 Pet 1:12). Spanish 'habiendo sido confirmados / ser fortalecidos' marks the receptive side of the strengthening dynamic. 2×
