stand firm, persevere; stand, be in a standing position
1. stand firm, persevere To stand firm, hold one's ground, or remain steadfast in faith and commitment; a late Koine present formed from the perfect hesteka of histemi, used predominantly by Paul as a vigorous exhortation to spiritual perseverance. In 1 Cor 16:13 'stand firm (stekete) in the faith'; in Gal 5:1 'stand firm (stekete) in the liberty with which Christ freed us'; in Phil 1:27 and 4:1 'stand firm (stekete) in one spirit/in the Lord'; in 1 Thess 3:8 'we live if you stand firm (stekete) in the Lord'; in 2 Thess 2:15 'stand firm (stekete) and hold the traditions.' Also Rom 14:4 where a servant 'stands' (stekei) or falls before his own master, and Jn 8:44 where the devil 'has not stood' (esteken) in the truth, i.e. did not persevere in it. Spanish 'estad firmes / esta firme' (stand firm), Arabic 'ithbutu' (be steadfast), Korean 'seora / gukge seora' (stand / stand firmly) all confirm the sense of resolved commitment.

2. stand, be in a standing position To stand physically, to be in the posture of standing; a literal positional sense. In Mk 11:25 'when you stand (stekete) praying, forgive' refers to the physical posture of prayer; in Mk 3:31 his mother and brothers came and 'standing' (stekontes) outside sent word to him. Spanish 'esteis de pie / estando de pie' (be standing / being on one's feet), Hebrew 'omedim' (standing), Arabic 'taqumuna / waqifina' (you are standing / standing ones) all indicate the simple physical act of being upright rather than spiritual perseverance.
