sporos -- seed; what is sown, whether literal grain or figuratively the word of God
Derived from speiro ('to sow'), sporos denotes seed in its agricultural sense -- the grain cast upon the ground by a farmer. In the Synoptic parables it carries both literal and figurative weight: the sower goes out to sow his seed (Luke 8:5), and Jesus explains that 'the seed is the word of God' (Luke 8:11). Paul extends the metaphor in 2 Corinthians 9:10, where God supplies 'seed for the sower' as a figure of generous provision. Spanish semilla, French semence, and German Saat all point consistently to the agricultural sense of 'that which is planted,' with the figurative extension to divine word and provision arising naturally from the parabolic context.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Seed intended for sowing -- the grain or kernel that a farmer scatters on the ground, used both literally of agricultural practice and figuratively of God's word and providential supply. In Mark 4:26-27, a man casts sporos upon the earth and sleeps while it grows mysteriously; in Luke 8:11, Jesus identifies the seed as the word of God. Paul draws on the same imagery in 2 Cor 9:10 ('he who supplies seed to the sower'). Spanish semilla and French semence/semailles converge on the sowing-seed concept, while the domain assignment to PEOPLE_KINSHIP reflects the metaphorical extension to spiritual offspring and fruitfulness inherent in the parabolic tradition. 6×
