Mixed with myrrh, flavored or drugged with myrrh; describing wine combined with myrrh for medicinal or deadening effect
At Golgotha, soldiers offered Jesus wine mixed with myrrh, but he refused it (Mark 15:23). The participle ἐσμυρνισμένος describes wine drugged with myrrh, likely intended to dull pain or awareness during crucifixion. Myrrh added bitter flavor and possible narcotic properties. Jesus's refusal to drink signals his determination to face death fully conscious, experiencing the cup of suffering completely. This contrasts with his later acceptance of sour wine (15:36), which was not medicated. The myrrhed wine represents an offered mercy Jesus deliberately declines to maintain clarity through his passion.

Senses
1. sense 1 Mark 15:23 uses the perfect passive participle ἐσμυρνισμένον modifying 'wine': 'they were giving him wine mixed with myrrh.' The perfect tense suggests wine prepared beforehand, myrrh already infused. Spanish 'con mirra mezclado,' French 'mêlé de myrrhe,' German 'gemyrrt'—all indicate the mixture. Some manuscripts read 'gall' (χολή) instead of myrrh (σμύρνα), perhaps harmonizing with Matthew 27:34. Either way, the substance made the wine unpalatable and possibly narcotic. Jesus's refusal shows resolve to drain the cup of suffering fully aware.
