look at, consider, pay attention to; watch out for, be on guard
2. watch out for, be on guard To watch out for, be vigilant against, or take heed; carries a warning or cautionary nuance. In Rom 16:17 Paul exhorts believers 'to watch out for' (skopein) those who cause divisions; in Phil 3:17 they should 'observe' (skopeite) those who walk according to the apostolic pattern (as models to follow or pitfalls to avoid); in Lk 11:35 Jesus warns 'look' (skopei) whether the light in you is not darkness. Hebrew 'lishmor/hishtammer' (guard/be careful), Arabic 'ulahizu/unzur' (notice/look!), Korean 'salpirah/jusiharah' (examine/watch closely), Spanish 'vigilar/mira/observad' (watch/look/observe) all point to watchful alertness rather than mere contemplation.

1. look at, consider, pay attention to To look at attentively, consider, or fix one's gaze upon; denotes careful observation and mindful regard. In 2 Cor 4:18 believers are 'looking at' (skopounton) the things unseen rather than seen; in Phil 2:4 each should be 'looking at' (skopountes) the interests of others; in Gal 6:1 the restorer should be 'watching' (skopon) himself lest he also be tempted. German 'achten auf' (pay attention to), French 'observer' (observe), Arabic 'nazirina' (gazing), Hebrew 'mistakkelim/ro'im' (looking/seeing), Korean 'baraboneun/doraboneun' (gazing at/looking around) all confirm the sense of attentive consideration.
