1. stumbling block, cause of offense — A trap-stick, snare, or obstacle that causes someone to stumble, fall, or sin. Used both literally and figuratively in the New Testament for anything that leads to spiritual downfall or moral offense. This includes Peter being called a stumbling block (Matt 16:23), the stumbling blocks gathered at judgment (Matt 13:41), warnings about causing others to stumble (Matt 18:7, Luke 17:1, Rom 16:17), the scandal of the cross (1 Cor 1:23, Gal 5:11), and Christ as the stone of stumbling (Rom 9:33, 1 Pet 2:8). The Hebrew equivalent is consistently mikshol. All occurrences share the same fundamental semantic range of an obstacle to faith or moral standing, whether the grammatical number is singular or plural, and regardless of case. 15×
