Σήθ G4589
Seth, the third son of Adam, born after Cain killed Abel, ancestor of Noah and the Messianic line
After Abel's murder, Eve bore Seth, declaring that God had appointed another offspring in Abel's place (Genesis 4:25). His line would preserve the godly seed through whom blessing would come, contrasting with Cain's cursed descendants. Seth's genealogy leads through Enosh (when people began to call on the Lord's name) to Noah and eventually to Abraham. Luke includes Seth in Jesus's genealogy (3:38), tracing the line all the way to Adam, 'the son of God.' Seth represents God's gracious preservation of the promised line despite human violence.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Luke 3:38 lists Seth (Σήθ) as the son of Adam in the ascending genealogy. The indeclinable Greek form preserves the Hebrew שֵׁת. By extending the genealogy beyond Abraham to Adam, Luke universalizes Jesus's significance—he comes not just for Israel but for all humanity. Seth's position as Adam's designated heir (rather than Cain) theologically prefigures Christ as the true seed who replaces the murderous first brother with righteous offspring. 1×
