Sergius Paulus held the Roman governorship of Cyprus when Paul and Barnabas arrived on their first missionary journey. Luke describes him as 'an intelligent man' who summoned the apostles to hear God's word (Acts 13:7). His household included the Jewish magician Bar-Jesus (Elymas), whose opposition led to dramatic confrontation. After witnessing Elymas's blindness, the proconsul believed, 'astonished at the teaching of the Lord.' This represents one of Luke's few named high-status converts and the only proconsular conversion in Acts.
