Σάτον is a transliteration of the Hebrew סְאָה (seah), a standard measure for grain and dry goods in ancient Israel. It equaled roughly one-third of an ephah or about 13 liters (3.5 gallons). Jesus uses this measure in his parable of the leaven, where a woman hides yeast in three sata of flour—an enormous quantity, enough to feed a hundred people. The hyperbolic amount emphasizes the kingdom of God's transformative power and expansive reach. The preservation of the Hebrew measurement term grounds Jesus' teaching in the everyday commerce of Jewish life.
