Σαλώμη G4539
Salome, a female follower of Jesus who witnessed the crucifixion and visited the tomb
Σαλώμη derives from the Hebrew שָׁלוֹם (shalom), meaning 'peace.' This Salome was one of the faithful women who followed Jesus in Galilee, witnessed his crucifixion from a distance, and came to the tomb on Easter morning with spices to anoint his body. Mark identifies her alongside Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James as among Jesus' most devoted disciples. She represents the women who remained faithful when many male disciples fled, and who became the first witnesses to the empty tomb. Traditional identification links her to the mother of James and John, though this is debated.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Mark 15:40 introduces Salome among the women at the cross, and Mark 16:1 lists her among those bringing burial spices to Jesus' tomb. The English gloss 'spices' in one instance reflects contextual merging with the purpose of their visit rather than the name itself. European languages uniformly transliterate the name (Salomé, Salome), recognizing its Hebrew peace-etymology while honoring this faithful disciple. 2×
