An adjective describing physical or moral filth. In James 2:2, it describes shabby, dirty clothing worn by a poor person entering the assembly—contrasted with fine apparel. In Revelation 22:11, it appears in a solemn pronouncement: let the filthy still be filthy (parallel to 'let the righteous still do right'). One use is socioeconomic (dirty garments signaling poverty), the other eschatological (moral defilement becoming fixed). Both involve visible manifestation of condition.
