N-NMS  |  2× in 1 sense
Rehoboam, son of Solomon, king whose reign saw Israel's division into two kingdoms
A proper name (Hebrew רְחַבְעָם) for Solomon's son. Both NT uses are in Matthew 1:7, in Jesus' genealogy. Rehoboam's harsh policies provoked the northern tribes' rebellion, splitting the united monarchy (1 Kings 12). His inclusion in the Davidic line is a reminder that Messiah's lineage includes not only the faithful but also those whose failures brought disaster. Yet God's covenant promise endures despite human folly.

Senses
1. sense 1 The glosses transliterate the Hebrew name ('Rehoboam,' 'Roboam'). Matthew 1:7 (appearing twice in the genealogy) names him as Solomon's heir and ancestor of Christ. The OT background—Rehoboam's refusal to lighten the tax burden, leading to national schism—reminds readers that the messianic line passes through failure and judgment, yet God's redemptive plan continues.
