Raiz de una planta; en sentido figurado, origen, fuente o causa fundamental de algo. En su sentido mas basico, ῥίζα es la parte subterranea de una planta que la ancla y la nutre. Sin embargo, el Nuevo Testamento explota ampliamente esta imagen en el lenguaje figurado. Juan el Bautista advierte que 'el hacha ya esta puesta a la raiz de los arboles' (Mt 3:10; Lc 3:9), senalando un juicio divino inminente. La parabola del sembrador de Jesus describe la semilla que cae en terreno pedregoso sin raiz profunda (Mt 13:6, 21; Mc 4:6, 17). Pablo habla de la raiz de Isai (Ro 15:12) y advierte a los creyentes gentiles que 'la raiz te sostiene' (Ro 11:16-18).
