polos -- a colt, young donkey; the unbroken young animal on which Jesus made his triumphal entry
The noun polos ('colt, foal') in classical Greek could denote the young of any animal -- horse, donkey, camel, or elephant. In the New Testament, however, all twelve occurrences refer to the young donkey of Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem, fulfilling Zechariah 9:9: 'mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey' (Matt 21:5). The Synoptic accounts describe the disciples finding the colt tied up, untying it, and bringing it to Jesus (Mark 11:2-7; Luke 19:30-35), while John identifies it simply as a 'young donkey' (12:15). Spanish pollino, French anon, and German Fohlen/Fullen all point to the same young equid -- a single, vivid image of humble kingship.

Senses
1. a colt A young donkey or colt, specifically the animal Jesus rode into Jerusalem fulfilling Zechariah 9:9. All twelve NT occurrences cluster in the triumphal entry narratives (Matt 21:2, 5, 7; Mark 11:2, 4, 5, 7; Luke 19:30, 33, 35; John 12:15). French anon and Spanish pollino specify a donkey's foal; German Fohlen is more generic -- all converge on one sense. 12×
