Tropezar, dar un traspié, caer; fallar moral o espiritualmente, pecar o errar en la conducta.
Verbo que significa tropezar o dar un traspié, usado casi exclusivamente en el NT en su sentido metafórico de fracaso moral o espiritual. Romanos 11:11 plantea la pregunta decisiva: «¿Acaso tropezaron para caer sin remedio?», distinguiendo un tropiezo temporal de un colapso definitivo. Santiago emplea el término para subrayar la universalidad de la debilidad humana: «todos tropezamos de muchas maneras» (3:2), y quien guarda toda la ley pero tropieza en un solo punto se hace culpable de toda ella (2:10). El español «tropezar» conserva fielmente la imagen física del traspié detrás de la metáfora moral.
