προσοφείλω G4359
to owe besides, to owe in addition, to be still in debt for something more
A compound verb indicating additional debt beyond what might already be owed. Classical usage described owing something still or being in arrears. Paul uses it in Philemon 19 with delicate humor: if Onesimus owes you anything, charge it to me—though I could mention that you owe me your very self besides. The verb captures Paul's reminder that Philemon's spiritual debt to Paul (owing him his very self, since Paul led him to Christ) far exceeds any financial debt Onesimus might owe Philemon.
Senses
1. sense 1 — The translations emphasize the debt ('you owe,' 'me debes,' 'schulden'). Paul's rhetorical strategy depends on this verb: technically Onesimus may owe Philemon money or labor, but Philemon owes Paul infinitely more—his very self, his spiritual life, his existence as a Christian. This additional debt (προσοφείλεις) reframes the entire situation: how can Philemon demand payment from Onesimus when Philemon himself is perpetually indebted to Paul? 1×
