πρόθῡμος G4289
ready, willing, eager; disposed and prepared for action
This adjective describes readiness, willingness, and eagerness to act. Classical usage emphasized both mental disposition and active zeal. The New Testament uses it to contrast the willing spirit with weak flesh and to describe Paul's eagerness to preach the gospel. It conveys both inner disposition and outward readiness.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Describes the state of being willing, ready, or eager for action. In the parallel passages Matthew 26:41 and Mark 14:38, Jesus tells the disciples 'the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.' Romans 1:15 expresses Paul's eagerness: 'I am ready to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.' The Spanish 'dispuesto,' French 'disposé,' and German 'bereitwillig' all capture the sense of willingness and readiness. This word addresses the gap between spiritual desire and physical capacity, or describes wholehearted readiness to fulfill a mission. 3×
