How much? How many? An interrogative of quantity, degree, or number, often in rhetorical comparisons.
An interrogative adjective and adverb asking about quantity, extent, or degree. In the Gospels it appears frequently in Jesus' rhetorical arguments from lesser to greater: if earthly fathers give good gifts, how much more the heavenly Father (Matt 7:11); if a sheep is valuable, how much more a person (Matt 12:12). It also asks straightforward questions of number, as when Jesus inquires how many loaves are available before the feeding miracles (Matt 15:34; Mark 6:38). Spanish cuánto/cuántos and French combien map the same dual range of degree and enumeration.
1. how much — Interrogative of degree or extent: 'how much,' 'how great,' 'how long' -- used to ask about magnitude, duration, or intensity, and especially prominent in a fortiori (how-much-more) arguments. Jesus asks how much more valuable a person is than a sheep (Matt 12:12), and how much greater the darkness when the inner light fails (Matt 6:23). Mark 9:21 uses it temporally: 'How long has this been happening to him?' Spanish cuánto and French combien both serve this scalar sense. 16×

2. how many — Interrogative of number or count: 'how many' -- asking about discrete, countable quantities. Jesus asks the disciples how many loaves they have (Matt 15:34; Mark 6:38) and later how many baskets of fragments they gathered (Matt 16:9-10). Pilate asks Jesus how many charges are brought against him (Matt 27:13). Spanish cuántos (plural) and French combien both handle this enumerative sense, though German wie viel covers both degree and number without distinction. 11×
