πόρνος G4205
A sexually immoral person, one who practices fornication or sexual transgression
Designates a person who engages in sexual immorality, used in vice lists and exclusion warnings throughout the epistles and Revelation. Paul instructs Corinthian believers not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother yet is a pornos (1 Cor 5:9–11), and declares that such persons will not inherit God's kingdom (1 Cor 6:9). Ephesians 5:5 equates the sexually immoral person with an idolater, and Hebrews 12:16 invokes Esau as a model of the profane pornos. Revelation places the pornos outside the holy city (Rev 21:8; 22:15). The Spanish 'fornicario/inmoral' and French 'impudique' highlight the social and moral exclusion this label carried.
Senses
1. sexually immoral person / fornicator — A person characterized by sexual immorality — fornication, prostitution, or illicit sexual conduct. Appears predominantly in vice lists and exclusion formulas: the sexually immoral will not inherit God's kingdom (1 Cor 5:9–11; 6:9; Eph 5:5), are warned of divine judgment (Heb 13:4; Rev 21:8; 22:15), and Esau is cited as an archetype of the profane pornos (Heb 12:16). Spanish 'fornicario' and English 'fornicator/sexually immoral person' both convey the behavioral and categorical force of the term. 10×
