πλήθ-ω G4130
To fill or be filled — with a substance, emotion, or the Holy Spirit; also to fulfill or complete a period of time.
A verb of fullness with two distinct arcs in Luke's writings. On one hand, it describes being filled with the Holy Spirit — the dominant Lukan usage, from Elizabeth and Zechariah (Luke 1:41, 67) to the disciples at Pentecost (Acts 2:4). On the other, it marks the completion of appointed times: Mary's days to give birth 'were fulfilled' (Luke 2:6), and Zechariah's term of priestly service 'was completed' (Luke 1:23). Spanish distinguishes fue lleno ('was filled') from se cumplieron ('were fulfilled'), and similarly German erfüllt serves double duty, while Arabic splits between مَلأ (mala'a, 'to fill') and the temporal تَمَّ (tamma, 'to be completed').
1. fill with substance or spirit — To fill or be filled with a physical substance, emotion, or especially the Holy Spirit, resulting in a state of fullness that prompts speech or action. Spanish fue lleno/fueron llenados and German erfüllt render this consistently. Luke 1:15 promises John the Baptist will be filled with the Holy Spirit from the womb; Elizabeth (Luke 1:41) and Zechariah (Luke 1:67) are filled and prophesy. The wedding hall in Matt 22:10 is filled with guests, and in Matt 27:48 a sponge is filled with vinegar — showing the verb spans from physical containers to spiritual empowerment. 18×

2. fulfill or complete time — To bring a period of time, a prophecy, or an appointed event to completion or fulfillment — marking that the designated span has run its full course. Spanish cumplirse/se cumplieron ('to be fulfilled') and temporal Arabic تَمَّ (tamma) distinguish this from the filling sense. Luke 1:23 notes that Zechariah's days of priestly service 'were completed'; Luke 1:57 that Elizabeth's time to give birth 'was fulfilled'; and Luke 2:6, 21-22 mark the completion of Mary's days and the time of purification. The emphasis is on divinely appointed timing reaching its full measure. 6×
