1. seize, arrest, apprehend — To seize, arrest, or apprehend a person, typically in a context of legal or hostile action. This is the predominant NT sense of piazo, occurring especially in the Gospel of John where the Jewish authorities repeatedly seek to seize Jesus (John 7:30, 32, 44; 8:20; 10:39; 11:57) and ultimately arrest him. Also used of Peter's arrest by Herod (Acts 12:4), the attempt to seize Paul in Damascus (2 Cor 11:32), and the eschatological capture of the beast in Revelation 19:20. The aorist passive epiasthe (was seized) indicates forceful apprehension. Peter's act of taking the lame man by the hand (Acts 3:7, piasas) uses the same word in a benign grasping sense but the physical action of seizing remains. Hebrew glosses use taphas (to seize/grasp) and Arabic uses qabadha (to arrest), consistently reflecting hostile or forceful apprehension across all occurrences. 10×

2. catch (fish or game) — To catch fish or game, a specialized application of the basic meaning 'to seize' applied to fishing or hunting rather than to arresting persons. Found in John 21:3 and 21:10, where the disciples catch fish on the Sea of Tiberias after the resurrection. The Hebrew glosses use taphas (to catch/seize) in the same root but the domain is distinctly different -- fishing rather than hostile apprehension. Korean uses jab-atda (caught) and Spanish uses pescaron (they fished/caught), using fishing-specific vocabulary that differs from the arrest terminology used in the other sense.
