Formado a partir de πείθω (persuadir, confiar) y ἀρχή (autoridad, gobierno), este verbo designa la obediencia dirigida específicamente hacia quienes ocupan posiciones de autoridad, ya sea divina o civil. La célebre declaración de Hechos 5:29, «Es necesario obedecer a Dios antes que a los hombres», emplea esta palabra para situar la autoridad divina por encima de la humana, convirtiéndolo en un texto fundamental sobre la conciencia y la desobediencia civil.
