En la parábola de las diez vírgenes (Mt 25:1-11), el término designa a las acompañantes de la boda cuya preparación o falta de ella simboliza la disposición espiritual. Pablo lo emplea tanto literalmente, para mujeres solteras que eligen el celibato (1 Co 7:25-34), como figuradamente, para la iglesia presentada como virgen pura ante Cristo (2 Co 11:2). 15×
