A noun meaning transgressor or lawbreaker — someone who deliberately crosses a boundary set by law. Derived from παραβαίνω (to step aside, transgress), it originally described the warrior standing beside a charioteer, but in the NT it is entirely moral: one who violates divine law. Paul uses it pointedly in Romans 2 to argue that circumcision profits nothing if one breaks the law (Rom 2:25, 27), and in Galatians 2:18 he warns against rebuilding what was torn down, which would make him a transgressor. James applies it democratically: stumbling on one point makes one guilty of the whole law (Jas 2:9, 11). The Spanish 'transgresor' and French 'transgresseur' both preserve the Latin-rooted sense of stepping across a boundary.
