Οὐρίας G3774
Uriah (Hebrew personal name, 'YHWH is my light')
This is the Greek rendering of the Hebrew name Uriah, most famously borne by the Hittite warrior whose wife Bathsheba was taken by King David. Matthew includes him in Jesus' genealogy, one of the few names mentioned alongside a moral scandal. The name itself means 'YHWH is my light,' an ironic echo given how David's sin cast darkness over Uriah's household. The genealogy doesn't hide the sordid history but integrates it, showing that Messiah's lineage includes sinners and victims alike.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Matthew 1:6 identifies Solomon as born 'of her who had been the wife of Uriah,' referencing Bathsheba without naming her directly. The phrasing foregrounds the scandal: Uriah's violation and murder loom in the background of David's otherwise celebrated reign. Including this detail in Messiah's genealogy signals that God's redemptive purposes work through flawed humans and broken histories. 1×
