Ouketi (a compound of ouk + eti, 'not' + 'still/yet') signals that something which was formerly the case has now ceased. Its 50 New Testament occurrences mark decisive transitions: what God has joined, humans must 'no longer' separate (Matt 19:6); after the Transfiguration, the disciples saw 'no longer' anyone except Jesus alone (Mark 9:8); the prodigal son declares himself 'no longer' worthy to be called a son (Luke 15:19, 21); and the risen Christ 'no longer' dies (Rom 6:9). The adverb carries an implicit narrative of change — a before-and-after that makes it a favorite for conversion, death-and-resurrection, and new-covenant theology. Spanish 'ya no,' French 'ne plus,' and German 'nicht mehr' all preserve this temporal-cessative force.
