fasting, not having eaten or being hungry
The state of being without food, whether by necessity or choice. Jesus uses this adjective to describe the crowds following Him in the wilderness—'they are hungry' (Matthew 15:32, Mark 8:3)—expressing His compassion for their physical need. The classical range includes both voluntary fasting and involuntary hunger, but the Gospel context emphasizes the latter: these people have remained with Jesus, exhausting their provisions, and now face the danger of collapsing from lack of food.

1. sense 1 — Being unfed, in a state of hunger or fasting. The Synoptic passages show Jesus' awareness of physical hunger as a pastoral concern—He will not send them away fasting lest they faint. The term can describe voluntary religious fasting elsewhere, but here it's simply prolonged absence from food. Cross-linguistic renderings distinguish 'fasting' (voluntary abstinence) from 'hungry' (need state), with Spanish 'en ayunas' and German 'nüchtern' suggesting both possibilities. 2×
