Neri, an ancestor of Jesus listed in Luke's genealogy
Neri appears in Luke 3:27 as the son of Melchi and father of Shealtiel, placing him in the post-exilic portion of Jesus' genealogy. The name is the Greek form of the Hebrew Neriah (נֵרִיָּה), meaning 'lamp of the LORD' or 'my light is Yahweh.' Neriah is better known as the father of Baruch, Jeremiah's scribe (Jeremiah 32:12). Whether the genealogical Neri is identical to or related to Jeremiah's contemporary is uncertain. Like many names in Luke's post-exilic list, Neri appears nowhere else in Scripture, underscoring the obscurity through which the Davidic line passed during the centuries of foreign domination. Yet God's purposes run through forgotten generations as surely as through celebrated kings.
