Young man, youth — a male in his prime, from adolescent to young adult; sometimes an angelic figure
The noun νεανίσκος (neaniskos) designates a young man roughly between adolescence and full maturity. The rich young man who asks Jesus about eternal life is a neaniskos (Matt 19:20, 22), as is the unnamed youth who flees naked from Gethsemane (Mark 14:51), a detail unique to Mark and endlessly debated. At the empty tomb, the women encounter a neaniskos in a white robe (Mark 16:5) — likely an angelic figure, though Mark's choice of this human word is striking. Luke uses it for the widow of Nain's dead son whom Jesus raises (Luke 7:14), and Acts records Peter quoting Joel's prophecy that 'your young men shall see visions' (Acts 2:17). Spanish 'joven' and French 'jeune homme' capture the age range.
