Ναζαρηνός G3479
Nazarene; a designation identifying Jesus as originating from Nazareth in Galilee
A gentilic title meaning 'one from Nazareth,' used exclusively in Mark and Luke to identify Jesus by his hometown. In the mouths of demons (Mark 1:24, Luke 4:34) it carries a note of recognition and alarm, while in ordinary speech it simply locates Jesus geographically. The Semitic form Nazarenos (rather than the Attic pattern) reflects the Aramaic-speaking milieu of Galilee, as Dalman noted. After the resurrection the title persists (Mark 16:6), now charged with deeper significance.
Senses
1. Nazarene, person from Nazareth — A gentilic adjective designating Jesus as a native of Nazareth in lower Galilee. Used as a identifying title ('Jesus the Nazarene') by both human speakers and demons in Mark and Luke. The consistent rendering across languages—Spanish 'Nazareno,' German 'Nazarener,' French 'Nazarénien'—preserves the place-name origin. All six NT occurrences apply solely to Jesus, functioning as a de facto surname (Mark 1:24; 16:6). 6×
