Conj  |  34× in 1 sense
neither, nor — negative conjunction used in pairs (mete...mete) to deny two or more alternatives
Mete is the negative correlative conjunction used with the subjective-volitional mood (as distinct from oute, which pairs with the indicative), appearing 34 times in the New Testament almost always in the doubled pattern mete...mete ('neither...nor'). Its most memorable deployment comes in the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus forbids swearing by a cascading series of sacred referents — 'neither by heaven, nor by earth, nor by Jerusalem, nor by your own head' (Matt 5:34-36). James echoes this prohibition nearly verbatim (Jas 5:12). Paul employs it to list things that cannot separate believers from God's love (Rom 8:38-39) and to describe the absolute novelty of new creation where 'neither circumcision nor uncircumcision' counts (Gal 6:15). Spanish and French both render it with the simple negative 'ni.'

Senses
1. sense 1 A negative correlative conjunction pairing as mete...mete ('neither...nor') to systematically exclude alternatives. Central to Jesus' prohibition of oaths — 'neither by heaven, nor by earth, nor by Jerusalem' (Matt 5:34-36) — echoed in James 5:12. Paul uses the paired construction to enumerate what cannot sever believers from divine love (Rom 8:38-39) and to relativize circumcision (Gal 6:15). 34×
