Medes, an ancient people from Media (modern northwestern Iran)
This plural proper noun designates the inhabitants of Media, the ancient kingdom southeast of the Caspian Sea. In Acts 2:9, Medes appear in Luke's catalogue of peoples present at Pentecost who heard the apostles speaking in their native languages. The cross-linguistic glosses simply transliterate or translate the ethnic designation. The Medes were historically significant as part of the Medo-Persian empire and are mentioned frequently in Old Testament prophecy.

Senses
1. sense 1 Luke includes Medes in his comprehensive list of diaspora Jews and proselytes gathered in Jerusalem for Pentecost. The multilingual evidence preserves the ethnic designation through transliteration or direct translation. The Medes' presence represents the eastern frontier of the Jewish dispersion, as Median territory was where northern Israelites had been exiled centuries earlier. Their hearing the gospel in their own language fulfilled the universal scope of Pentecost's reversal of Babel.
