μετάθεσις G3331
N-GFS  |  3× in 1 sense
change, removal, transference from one state or position to another
This noun denotes fundamental change or transference. Hebrews uses it twice: the priesthood's change from Levitical to Melchizedek order necessitates a law change (Heb 7:12), and at the end, shakable things will be removed so unshakable things remain (Heb 12:27). Enoch's 'translation' (Heb 11:5) uses the same root—he was transferred from earth without death. The term implies not mere modification but displacement or substitution. Spanish 'cambio/remoción/traslación' and French 'changement' capture this range from change to removal to translation.

Senses
1. sense 1 A fundamental change, removal, or transference from one state to another. In Hebrews, it describes the priesthood's transformation (7:12), Enoch's bodily translation to heaven (11:5), and the eschatological removal of created things (12:27). The Greek μετάθεσις can mean positional change, exchange, or complete removal. Spanish distinguishes 'cambio' (change), 'remoción' (removal), and 'traslación' (translation), showing the term's semantic breadth.
