Midday or noon—when the sun reaches its zenith. By extension, the south, since the noonday sun points south in the northern hemisphere. Acts uses both senses: Philip heads toward the south (8:26), and Paul's conversion happens at midday (22:6). Classical Greek used it for high noon ('the sun stands at midday'), mealtimes ('ate figs at noon'), or geographical direction ('the city lies toward the south'). The dual meaning creates occasional ambiguity, resolved by context.
