Μέν es una partícula discursiva sutil que opera en dos niveles. Usada de forma absoluta, afirma con la fuerza de 'ciertamente' o 'en verdad'. Con mayor frecuencia, establece un contraste correlativo: μέν...δέ ('por una parte...por otra'). El español a menudo la deja sin traducir, mientras que el francés d'une part y el alemán zwar captan el matiz contrastivo de manera más explícita. En Hch 1:5, por ejemplo, μέν marca el bautismo de agua de Juan como la primera cláusula que espera su contraparte con δέ sobre el bautismo del Espíritu — un ritmo estructural que recorre la prosa cuidadosa de Lucas y la argumentación teológica de Pablo.
