Μελχισεδέκ G3198
Melchizedek; the ancient priest-king of Salem who blessed Abraham, a type of Christ's eternal priesthood.
Melchisedek is the Greek transliteration of the Hebrew Malki-Tsedeq ('my king is righteousness'), the mysterious priest-king of Salem who blessed Abraham and received tithes from him (Gen 14:18-20). In the New Testament, all eight occurrences appear in Hebrews, where the author builds a sustained argument that Christ's priesthood is 'after the order of Melchizedek' (Heb 5:6, 10; 6:20; 7:1-17) — superior to the Levitical priesthood because it is eternal and without genealogical succession. Translations uniformly preserve the name phonetically: Spanish 'Melquisedec,' French 'Melchisedek,' German 'Melchisedek.'
Senses
1. sense 1 — The personal name Melchizedek (Hebrew 'my king is righteousness'), the priest-king of Salem who blessed Abraham (Gen 14:18-20). All eight NT occurrences are in Hebrews, where the author develops an extended typological argument: Christ holds a priesthood 'after the order of Melchizedek' (Heb 5:6; 6:20; 7:1, 11, 15, 17), one that is superior to the Levitical order because it is without beginning or end. Cross-lingual renderings are consistently phonetic — Spanish 'Melquisedec,' French 'Melchisedek,' German 'Melchisedek' — preserving the Hebrew etymological meaning. 8×
