To make drunk or become drunk; to be intoxicated with wine or, figuratively, with influence.
The causative form of methuo (to be drunk), this verb means to make someone drunk or, in the passive, to get drunk oneself. Its New Testament uses range from the literal -- servants eating and drinking and getting drunk (Luke 12:45), or those who get drunk doing so at night (1 Thess 5:7) -- to the powerfully figurative. In Ephesians 5:18 Paul sets drunkenness with wine in direct contrast to being filled with the Spirit. Most strikingly, Revelation 17:2 depicts the nations as 'drunk' on the wine of Babylon's immorality, a metaphor the Spanish 'embriagarse' and French 's'enivrer' faithfully preserve.
