The disciple selected by lot to replace Judas among the Twelve (Acts 1:23-26). He met the qualifications: he'd followed Jesus from John's baptism through the ascension. The community nominated two candidates—Joseph and Matthias—then prayed and cast lots, trusting God to show his choice. Matthias won, becoming the twelfth apostolic witness to the resurrection. His name, like Matthew's, derives from Hebrew Mattithiah ('gift of Yahweh'). After this selection, he disappears from the biblical record.
