a ransom price, the payment required to release captives or redeem slaves
The price paid to free a slave or release a captive—a ransom. Jesus uses it in his most famous self-description (Matthew 20:28, Mark 10:45): the Son of Man came to give his life 'as a ransom for many.' The image is commercial-legal: prisoners of war could be ransomed; slaves could buy freedom. The Septuagint uses it for the atonement money paid in Exodus—'a ransom for his soul.' Classical Greek distinguished ransom money from the gifts freely given, rewards, or prizes. The plural typically referred to ransom payments.
