Lysias; the Roman tribune (Claudius Lysias) who rescued Paul and commanded the Jerusalem garrison
Claudius Lysias was the Roman tribune (military commander) in charge of the garrison in Jerusalem's Fortress Antonia during Paul's final visit to the city. When a mob attacked Paul in the temple courts, Lysias rescued him with soldiers, initially mistaking him for an Egyptian revolutionary (Acts 21:31-38). After discovering a plot to assassinate Paul, Lysias transferred him under heavy guard to Caesarea and Governor Felix (Acts 23:26ff). His official letter to Felix (23:26) identifies him as 'Claudius Lysias'—Claudius being his Roman family name, Lysias his Greek personal name. His actions, while self-serving, providentially protected Paul.

Senses
1. sense 1 Lysias, specifically Claudius Lysias, the Roman tribune (military commander) stationed in Jerusalem. Acts 23:26 preserves his letter to Felix beginning 'Claudius Lysias, to his Excellency the governor Felix, greetings.' He rescued Paul from a Jewish mob (21:31-32), discovered a plot against Paul's life, and transferred him safely to Caesarea. Acts 24:7, 22 refer to him in the context of Paul's trial, where the Jewish leaders wanted Lysias to testify, but Felix delayed proceedings awaiting his arrival.
