Λευείτης G3019
Levite; a member of the tribe of Levi who assisted priests in temple service
Members of the tribe of Levi who were not descended from Aaron served in various temple roles: musicians, gatekeepers, assistants to the priests, and teachers of the Law. They received no tribal land inheritance, instead living in designated Levitical cities and supported by tithes. The New Testament mentions Levites three times. John 1:19 identifies the delegation sent to question John the Baptist as priests and Levites—official religious authorities. Luke 10:32 features a Levite in the Good Samaritan parable who, like the priest before him, passes by the wounded man. Acts 4:36 identifies Barnabas as a Levite from Cyprus.
