N-GMS  |  5× in 1 sense
Levi, a Hebrew proper name borne by the patriarch Jacob's son and by two ancestors of Jesus in Luke's genealogy.
Levi (Hebrew lewi, 'joined' or 'attached') appears in the NT primarily as the patriarch whose descendants became Israel's priestly tribe. Hebrews 7:5 and 7:9 invoke Levi in the argument that Melchizedek's priesthood supersedes the Levitical order — Levi himself, still 'in the loins of Abraham,' paid tithes to Melchizedek. Revelation 7:7 lists Levi among the twelve tribes sealed in the end times. Luke's genealogy names two otherwise unknown men called Levi in Jesus's ancestry (Luke 3:24, 29).

Senses
1. sense 1 Levi — a Hebrew proper name, most prominently the third son of Jacob and Leah, ancestor of the Levitical priesthood. In Heb 7:5, 9, the name anchors the theological argument that the Levitical priesthood is subordinate to Melchizedek's, since Levi was still 'in Abraham's body' when Abraham tithed. Rev 7:7 includes the tribe of Levi among the sealed. Luke 3:24 and 3:29 name two figures called Levi in Jesus's genealogy. The translations uniformly transliterate the name (spa: Leuí, fra: Lévi, deu: Levi), confirming its consistent treatment as a proper noun.
