gnat, tiny insect, mosquito
Jesus ridicules Pharisaic priorities with a memorable image: 'You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel!' (Matthew 23:24). The gnat represents the smallest, most insignificant creature—something one might carefully filter from drinking water to avoid uncleanness. The absurdity is that while meticulously straining out tiny gnats, they gulp down entire camels (the largest unclean animal). The hyperbole exposes inverted values: obsessing over minutiae while ignoring massive moral failures. Both animals are unclean, but the disproportion is comic and damning.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Jesus' hyperbolic critique of Pharisaic legalism uses the gnat-camel contrast for devastating effect. Gnats or mosquitoes were tiny insects one might strain from water; camels were the largest animals in the region. Both were ceremonially unclean, making the image work. All language witnesses identify small flying insects. The absurdity is the proportion: careful filtering of microscopic insects while swallowing massive beasts whole. Jesus exposes the moral blindness of majoring in minors—they obsess over tiny regulations while committing major injustices. 1×
