Aunque esta palabra puede referirse a un criterio o medio de juicio, en el Nuevo Testamento designa específicamente los tribunales o juzgados donde se dirimen disputas. El uso de Pablo es particularmente incisivo: reprocha a los creyentes de Corinto por llevar sus conflictos ante tribunales seculares en lugar de resolverlos dentro de la comunidad cristiana. Si los santos han de juzgar al mundo e incluso a los ángeles (1 Corintios 6:2), ciertamente son competentes para juzgar «asuntos triviales» (6:4) entre ellos. Santiago 2:6 emplea el plural para describir cómo los ricos arrastran a los pobres ante los tribunales, denunciando así la opresión económica.
