Crescens, companion of Paul (2 Timothy 4:10)
In Paul's final letter, he notes that 'Crescens has gone to Galatia' (2 Timothy 4:10). The Latin name means 'growing' or 'increasing.' Unlike Demas, mentioned in the same verse as having deserted Paul, Crescens apparently left on legitimate ministry business. Some manuscripts read 'Gaul' instead of 'Galatia,' which would make this one of the earliest references to Christian mission in Western Europe. Beyond this single reference, nothing certain is known of Crescens or his work.
