κρᾰταιό-ω G2901
To strengthen, grow strong; to become empowered or fortified in body or spirit.
Means to make strong or to become strengthened, used in both physical and spiritual senses. Luke uses it twice of Jesus' childhood development—the boy 'grew strong' (Luke 1:80; 2:40)—painting a picture of vigorous maturation. Paul then applies it to spiritual empowerment: 'be strong' as a command to the Corinthians (1 Cor 16:13) and a prayer that believers be 'strengthened with power in the inner person' (Eph 3:16). Spanish fortaleceos (strengthen yourselves) and French se-fortifier capture the reflexive, participatory quality of this strengthening.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To grow strong, be strengthened, or become empowered, whether physically or spiritually. In Luke 1:80 and 2:40, it describes the physical and spiritual maturation of John the Baptist and the child Jesus respectively—both 'grew and became strong.' In 1 Cor 16:13, Paul commands believers to 'be strong' (imperative), and in Eph 3:16 he prays for inner strengthening through the Spirit. The passive forms in Luke suggest divine enablement, while the active imperative in 1 Corinthians calls for human resolve. Spanish fortaleceos and German erstarken both convey the idea of gaining robust strength from within. 4×
