El Nuevo Testamento emplea ambos sentidos: la parábola de los labradores malvados presenta al hijo como el heredero legítimo a quien los labradores asesinan (Mt 21:38; Mc 12:7), mientras que Pablo y el autor de Hebreos aplican el término teológicamente a los creyentes que son herederos de Dios por la fe (Ro 4:13-14; Gá 3:29; Tit 3:7), e incluso a Cristo mismo como heredero de todas las cosas (Heb 1:2).
