Most prominently, this refers to the Emperor Claudius (ruled AD 41-54), during whose reign a famine occurred (Acts 11:28) and who expelled Jews from Rome (Acts 18:2). Acts 23:26 introduces us to another Claudius—Claudius Lysias, the Roman tribune (military commander) in Jerusalem who rescued Paul from a mob and later transferred him to Caesarea.
