κενόδοξ-ος G2755
Vainglorious, conceited, or marked by empty pride and self-glorification
This adjective describes people characterized by vain conceit or empty pride. Galatians 5:26 warns against becoming vainglorious, linking it with provoking and envying one another—the relational fruit of pride. The Spanish 'vanagloriosos' and German 'ruhmsüchtig' (fame-seeking) both emphasize the active pursuit of empty honor. This vice undermines Spirit-led community by fostering competition rather than mutual service.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Describes those characterized by vain conceit or empty pride, actively seeking worthless honor. Paul warns that such vainglory inevitably produces provocation and envy, creating toxic community dynamics where people compete for recognition rather than celebrating one another's gifts and walking in step with the Spirit. 1×
