κατα-φεύγω G2703
fled for refuge, escaped to a place of safety, sought asylum from danger
This verb means to flee for refuge or safety. In Acts 14:6, Paul and Barnabas learn of a plot to stone them in Iconium, so they 'fled (κατέφυγον) to Lystra and Derbe,' escaping imminent danger. Hebrews 6:18 uses the perfect participle metaphorically: 'we who have fled for refuge (καταφυγόντες) might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us.' Here, believers are pictured as fugitives who have run to God for asylum, finding in him a strong and sure anchor for the soul. The term captures both physical escape and spiritual sanctuary.

1. sense 1 — The two uses span literal flight from persecution (Acts) and metaphorical refuge in God (Hebrews). Classical usage (LSJ) includes fleeing for refuge to a place or person, having recourse to. Spanish 'huyeron' (they fled) and French 'se réfugier' (to take refuge) fit both senses. Paul's missionary strategy includes knowing when to flee rather than face certain death, preserving his life for further gospel work. The Hebrews passage recasts Christian conversion as a flight to God's protection, where the unchangeable promise and oath provide a refuge stronger than any earthly city of asylum. 2×
